Report Bullying NowSiena Catholic College strives to build an environment where all members of the school community are safe, secure and respected. In this environment, all individuals have the opportunity to reach their full potential academically spiritually and in cultural and sporting pursuits.

DEFINITION

Bullying is the misuse of power by an individual or group seeking to pressure, control, humiliate or harass another person or persons. Such behaviour causes stress and anxiety to others.

Bullying has the following features:

  • it is intentional, uninvited and chosen
  • it is a persistent and ongoing pattern of behaviour
  • it may be emotional, verbal, physical or organizational

EXAMPLES OF BULLYING & HARASSMENT

Physical: hitting: pushing: tripping: kicking: spitting on others
Verbal: teasing: using offensive names: yelling or screaming abuse: constant criticism of a person; inappropriate comments about a person’s appearance
Non-verbal: writing offensive notes, in any medium: graffiti about others: rude gestures staring
Cyber or
Psychological:
inappropriate use of information technologies, such as internet or mobile phones:
using e-mail, MSN, Websites (‘My Space, etc), text messaging to spread rumours or misinformation.
Unauthorized use of camera phones to cause harm to others.
Exclusion: deliberately excluding others from a group, refusing to sit next to someone, overtly encouraging other people to actively ignore or avoid a person
Extortion: threatening to take someone’s possessions, food or money
Property: stealing, hiding, damaging or destroying property

AS A WHOLE SCHOOL WE WILL:

  • Implement a clear structured process for dealing with bullying and notify parents of the process.
  • At all times foster a welcoming, inclusive environment where all people feel they belong.

TEACHERS WILL:

  • Take immediate action
  • Listen to each student or
  • Recognise the early warning signs of bullying
  • Use a problem solving approach
  • Be aware of bullying behaviour in adult models
  • State clearly that it is not OK to bully

REPORTING

Students and parents are encouraged to report incidents of Bullying & Harassment. An e-mail will be sent to the Principal (Mr Hight), the Deputy Principal (Mr Thornton), the Guidance Counsellor (Mr Cook), or your relevant Yr Level Co-ordinator – whoever you nominate.

At this stage, your information will be treated in strict confidentiality. You will be contacted but no action will be taken without consultation / agreement with you. Your nominated teacher will work with you and others to resolve the situation. (As you would appreciate, your name is necessary to enable us to consult and also to avoid the system being misused)
